Senior Social Media Manager Joellen Lu’s style is fashion-forward, carefree, and, what I like to call, “kinda sleepy.” It’s effort with an effortless affect. High + low. Ripped stockings, chipped polish, and $400 Maryam Nassir Zadeh block heel mules. She’s anti fast-fashion. She never brushes her hair. She refuses to invest in a $15 manicure. She loves vintage Gucci.

Three words to describe your style:

Nostalgic, risk-taking, and comfortable (to me).

What are your favorite colors to work with?

I play with a lot of color, usually pulling from warm, earthy palettes or pastels.

Style icon?

I really admire the styles of Alexa Chung, Solange, Björk, and Chloë Sevigny.

Favorite item of clothing?

Aside from vintage items, I love my Acne Studios star-studded moto jacket. It had a limited run so it’s no longer available. I feel good knowing I worked hard to own it!

How do you accent an outfit?

My favorite outfit accent, besides a bold cheek or lip, is shoes! I love pairing colorful socks with sandals.

How do you get ready in the morning?

I’m really lazy on weekday mornings, so my style is super laid back at work. I stare at my closet and find something weather-appropriate, brush my teeth, and bounce!

And how long does it take you to get ready?

Usually 15 minutes, 30 minutes if I decide to wear makeup.

Why do you want to express yourself?

Conformity bores me, but so does intentionally being alternative. I express myself via style with the goal of being comfortable in my own skin.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Besides seeing peoples’ unique styles on Instagram, I love independent magazines like Puss Puss, and I also check out the styling by niche brands like Reformation and Need Supply.

Philosophy on style?

Personal style is an ongoing process and up to each person’s individual pace!
